Considering the long history of Opal, Doublet is a comparatively new setting and manufacturing method of Opal. It refers to a type of opal where the natural layer of opal is complemented by a natural Queensland Ironstone. This gives the doublet a similar look to a black or natural boulder opal. Doublets allow people to enjoy the quality of black and boulder opal a fraction of the price.

Doublet should not be confused with Triplets. A Triplet opal contains a thin layer of opal in between two layers of non-opal materials, namely quartz or glass above the opal, and typically ironstone or onyx blow the opal, with adhesive used to bond the piece.

Triplets are often considered to be of inferior in terms of quality and desirability (reflected in its price) than other types of opal including doublets. This is especially because the top viewable and touchable layer of a Doublet opal is fact an opal, rather than a glass or quartz cover.
